Commuters faced more delays on the trains this morning after services ran late or were cancelled.

Southern blamed the disruptions on “poor weather conditions”.

Among the services affected were the 7.33am train from Brighton to London Bridge, which was cancelled and services between Brighton and East Croydon, where passengers were warned to expect “short notice alterations, cancellations and delays”.

The announcements came as more frustrated commuters joined The Argus’ Save Our Service campaign, to get Southern to improve its services.

Contributing to the campaign by posting on Twitter, Ben Catchpole said: “Since when has a cloudy sky and light drizzle been classifiable as 'adverse weather conditions'. Have I missed something?”

Fellow Brighton commuter Lainy Craig said: “On train an hour late, nowhere near London due to severe ice on the rails. Rubbish, it's slight cold!”

In a statement released later in the morning on its website, Southern said: "We would like to apologise to passengers for any inconvenience and disruption to their services and we are working to get services back to normal as soon as we can.

"The problem has occurred due to heavy frost and low temperatures in some areas of the network, which has led to the ‘conductor rail’ icing up. The ‘conductor rail’ is the third rail on the tracks that is electrified and provides power to run the majority of trains on our network.

"When this is frozen it interrupts the electricity supply and the train loses power. As well as some lines being impassable, several trains have unfortunately also been trapped (blocking lines) when they have lost power.

"Precautions were taken and our trains were put into ‘ice mode’ from yesterday afternoon in response to weather forecasts and we ran ‘ghost’ trains overnight on many routes to keep the lines clear. This morning we have also been using an emergency locomotive train to clear the mainline to Brighton. Network Rail also ran de-icer trains overnight. "
