A woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a motorbike.

She was crossing the road in Grand Parade, on the junction with Richmond Parade, Brighton, just after 3pm today when she was in collision with the motorcyclist.

The woman, in her early 50s and from Brighton, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with multiple fractures. The motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, from Brighton, was uninjured.

The road remains closed southbound, by St Peter's Church, while Sussex Police investigated the scene.

sad to hear of someone getting badly hurt, but, if i recall correctly, there is a pedestrian crossing at this junction. if it was working properly, and being used properly, then either the pedestrian, or the motorcyclist must have ignored a red man or light. this is a very sad way to learn a valuable lesson. if a crossing is available, then use it.

Whilst I can't comment on the immediate case until more information is put forth, I will say that I was on a bus today and noted that the driver (who was not speeding) had to sound the horn 3 times to alert people to the fact they were in the path of the vehicle. One pedestrian even thought it okay to run across the road in the path of an ambulance sounding its siren. These people were not children, they were all between 20 and 50yrs old. I see this sort of thing every time I am in the town and wonder why people dont use the crossings.

If you look at the picture of where the road was closed you will see the accident happened south of the crossing. I understand traffic was diverted up Richmond Place so the pedestrian was probably taking her life in here hands by trying to cross away from the pedestrian crossing. Seems to be happening more and more these days where people think if they cross in front of traffic they won't get hit.

I wish the pedestrain a speedy recovery and hope the motorcyclist wasn't too traumatised by the incident.
