A truck burst into flames near the A27, causing rush-hour congestion.
Fire crews and police were called to Goldstone Crescent in Hove following a crash involving a van and a truck. The truck was engulfed in flames shortly after.
Motorists faced hours of disruption, with congestion along the A27 as recovery and clean-up work was carried out.
A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said they were called shortly after 3pm on Wednesday to reports of a crash and a vehicle fire.
She said: “A van and an HGV collided and the van was well alight.
“Crews used a hose reel jet, breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera to deal with the incident.
“They also used an environmental pack after a diesel spill.”
A police spokeswoman said there were no injuries and no arrests were made.
