Police have increased visibility across parts of Sussex in response to the ongoing conflict in Israel.

The war, which began after Hamas militants stormed into Israel on Saturday, bringing gun battles to the its streets for the first time in decades, has already claimed at least 1,600 lives.

Sussex Police said they are aware of concerns being raised in relation to the conflict and have “increased visibility across parts of Sussex in order to provide an increased presence and reassurance to our communities”.

A police spokeswoman said: “We recognise there is the potential for increased tensions and are monitoring and working with communities and partners to ensure people feel safe and protected.

“We are continuing to work with synagogues, mosques and businesses to discuss any concerns.”

Officers are also reviewing footage from a protest in Brighton on Sunday, where pro-Palestinian protesters called for Israel to stop firing missiles into the Gaza Strip.

“We remain committed to ensuring any reported offences are investigated proportionately, without prejudice, and in line with legislation, while recognising the complexities and sensitivities of the issue.”

The Home Secretary Suella Braverman has said there is “no place on British streets for demonstrations that glorify terrorism” and said she is writing to police chiefs to urge them to use all their powers to prevent disorder and distress.
