RESIDENTS and motorists were told to keep windows and doors closed after a serious blaze at a recycling site caused plumes of smoke to billow into the air.
Eight fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and a command support unit were called to the scene at the Light Brothers Recycling site near Lewes at around 7.40pm last night.
Pictures and footage from the scene show fire crews tackling the blaze, with emergency services stationed at the centre well into the night.
The fire took place just as a convoy of equipment bound for an electricity substation parked for the night near the Southerham roundabout, less than a mile away.
Eyewitness Edward Holt said that the blaze was contained incredibly well by the fire service.
It's being contained incredibly well, the Fire service is working alongside the grab operator keeping the machine covered in water and then working on the fire.

Fire crews attended the fire for six hours as they worked to get the blaze under control.
A spokesman for the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no casualties in the incident, with crews inspecting the area this morning to ensure there are no potential hot spots.
