If now is the right time to bring a four-legged friend into your life, perhaps one of the dogs at Dogs Trust Shoreham could be your new BFF.

At the Dogs Trust's Shoreham by Sea centre, there are whopping 52 kennels, meaning they can care for a lot of dogs.

The charity believes every dog deserves a loving home and staff work hard to make sure that is what they get.

If you love man’s best friend but can’t take one in right now, you could help by volunteering at the centre instead.

There are currently volunteering opportunities offering dog-lovers the chance to capture special moments when residents find their forever homes.

If you are looking for a canine chum though, check out these perfect pooches - perhaps one of them will end up coming home with you.

Benji

The Argus: Benji is being looked after at Dogs Trust ShorehamBenji is being looked after at Dogs Trust Shoreham

Breed: Chocolate Labrador
Age: 9 years

Benji is a friendly, yet sensitive character. He loves nothing more than the company of people and is always keen for cuddles or joining you on a fun, scent-filled walk!

It is clear to see that Benji also loves his food, but he's doing great with his weight-loss and needs a supportive family who could help him continue in his quest to get fit and healthy!

He can be strong on his lead so needs adopters who are confident in managing his size and strength and who could teach him some basic, loose-lead walking.

Benji will happily greet other dogs when he's out and about but due to his disliking for sharing his favourite things, he'll need to be the only dog in the household.

As a result of Benji's general sensitivity, a need for a quieter lifestyle and his worries around sharing toys, he will need to live in an adult-only household, without any visiting children.

However, he could potentially live with a cat, rabbit, or guinea pig.

Benji finds it challenging when left alone so a multiple-person household, where's there's always someone around to keep him company will be perfect.

A bed next to yours at night-time is also a requirement of his and he likes to carry his own blanket up to bed with him!

A garden of his own is also essential.

Jack

The Argus: Jack is being looked after at Dogs Trust ShorehamJack is being looked after at Dogs Trust Shoreham

Breed: Jack Russell cross Chihuahua
Age: 9 years

Jack is an adorable but shy chap who likes to get to know people at his own pace. Once he's built your friendship, he loves to hop up onto your lap and snuggle under your jumper to keep warm!

Despite his age, Jack is super playful and enjoys a game of fetch and becomes animated and excitable at the sight of his harness, as he knows it means a walk is on the cards.

Jack would best be suited to a quieter lifestyle, in a peaceful home environment where there's not too much going on around him. He can become easily startled and reactive around noises, so is unsuitable to live in a block of flats or walk next to the busy roadsides.

Due to his sensitive nature and worries around children, Jack will need to have adult-only people pals, including any visitors to his home.

He will need to be the only pet at home and must have a private garden of his own to roam about in. Adopters who are around at home to keep him company for most of the day would be ideal, as he adores human company.

Jack is also used to sleeping in the bed with his people at night-time, so would love a family who are happy to continue this sleeping arrangement for him.

He'll melt your heart when watching him bury himself in a bundle of blankets to keep warm and toasty!

Jack's potential adopters should be aware that he is epileptic, though it is easily managed with his daily medication.

Lemmy

The Argus: Lemmy is being looked after at Dogs Trust ShorehamLemmy is being looked after at Dogs Trust Shoreham

Breed: Terrier Cross
Age: 7 Years

Lemmy has tonnes of character. It may take him some time to build up a relationship and develop his trust in new people, but once he knows you well, he'll make for a playful companion who's bound to keep you thoroughly entertained.

Lemmy is an interactive little chap who has a big love for his toys; he particularly enjoys a game of fetch and swap and he's also keen to participate in his training.

Lemmy has a super smart brain but being so clever can have its downfalls and Lemmy tends to find much of life overwhelming.

His ideal home would be with a patient, and active family who could continue with the training that he's been learning at the centre.

Lemmy is particularly worried by formal handling, such as vet visits, seeing other dogs out and about and sharing his favourite things, like toys and food. He'll need an undisturbed area of the house where he can go to for relaxation time and to enjoy chews and enrichment in peace.

He needs to be the only pet, in an adult-only household, without any visiting children or too many visitors in general.

A garden of his own is essential and he'd much prefer quieter walking areas, away from any hustle and bustle.

He's a good boy when travelling in the car, which is a great benefit if needing to drive him to more remote locations.

Maisie

The Argus: Maisie is being looked after at Dogs Trust ShorehamMaisie is being looked after at Dogs Trust Shoreham

Breed: Collie cross Springer Spaniel
Age: 9 months

Maisie loves keeping busy, whether that's searching for her toys in a game of hide and seek, playing fetch with her humans or exploring on long, outdoor adventures.

While she still has much to learn, Maisie is a bright young lady and highly motivated by her toys and treats, so she has lots of potential to develop her skillset.

Being an adolescent pup, Maisie is on the lookout for a home where she can receive plenty of guidance, reward-based training and confidence building from her new family.

Active adopters who could dedicate lots of their time to her would be a great match for her and taking her to Dog School classes would be hugely advantageous.

Continuing to build on her socialisation with other dogs of a calm and friendly nature would be a great benefit for Maisie and help her to develop more confidence, as she can be a little timid when first meeting new canine chums.

She could potentially live with another well-suited dog in her new home, but she cannot live with any cats, house rabbits or other small furry pets.

The youngest members of Maisie's family and any visitors to the home should be over the age of 14 and it is essential that she has a garden of her own.

Maisie is a loveable girl but can be cheeky at times and tends to collect items on her walks and around the home, that she isn't always keen on giving back. The training team can provide advice and guidance on how best to manage this behaviour.

Ruby and Sherlock

The Argus: Ruby and Sherlock are being looked after at Dogs Trust ShorehamRuby and Sherlock are being looked after at Dogs Trust Shoreham

Breed: Basset Hound
Age: 10 and 11 years

Ruby is a gentle-natured dog looking for a home with her best pal Sherlock.

Ruby enjoys a fuss from her humans, tucking into her dinner and sniffing along when going for a plod.

Despite Sherlock's age, he has a lot of love to give, a spring in his step and heaps of character.

Both like to get to know people at their own pace, but with a calm and gentle approach they'll soon be keen to spend every second in your company.

While Sherlock and Ruby don't let their age stop them from having fun, they are both looking for a relaxing home environment where they can enjoy life's luxuries and relish their retirement years.

As well as somewhere quiet, their home should be easily accessible in and out of the house, with minimal steps for example.

The youngest members of their family will need to be over the age of 12 and the same goes for visitors.

They are both a little unsure when meeting other canines, but Ruby is the more nervous of the two and prefers to keep to herself while out and about. Neither dogs can live with cats or small furry pets.

This adorable duo both need to lose a few extra pounds and would love a supportive family who could help them with this and get them feeling as happy and healthy as can be! Any potential adopters should be aware that Sherlock has a few underlying health conditions that need closely monitoring and which he requires ongoing medication for.
