AN INTERACTIVE map has revealed potential coronavirus "hotpots" in Sussex.

Using Public Health England data it shows the weekly coronavirus rate for different areas, dividing the county into Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

These are areas with an average population of 7,200.

And the map showed that one MSOA in Sussex had almost five times more recorded cases than the area with the next highest figure in the week leading up to October 21 (the most recent data used).

This meant the city had a weekly rate of 138.9 cases per 200,000 population.

Speaking yesterday following a sharp rise in the number of cases in Brighton and Hove, the city's director of public health Alistair Hill said: "In common with many areas in the South East, Brighton and Hove saw a high number of new cases reported over the weekend.

"A number of indicators inform the local alert level for an area, including the overall Covid-19 infection rate.

“We remain in tier one (medium alert), but if the trend continues upwards in this way we will be at risk of moving to tier two.

"The decision to escalate an area to tier two (high alert level) would be made by central government following consultation with the council.”

The number of weekly cases has also increased in several other areas of Sussex.

The interactive map showed MSOAs in the county in different colours depending on their seven-day rolling rate.
