THE M23 and M25 are closed in both directions after severe flooding.

Travel news service INRIX said both motorways are closed while work is carried out to stop the flooding.

An update reads: "M23 in both directions closed, severe delays due to flooding from J8 M25 J7 to J7 (Hooley).

"Congestion to Coulsdon via Brighton Road with further delays through neighbouring areas as traffic diverts.

"Affecting traffic through most of Surrey.

"The M23 has been closed for safety reasons due to flooding and poor weather in the area.

"There are several restrictions on the M25 between Leatherhead and Godstone, due to flooding.

"Affecting traffic heading in and out of London."

The roads have been shut since around 3.45pm.

The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for the next five days, with the potential of flash flooding or damage to buildings from lightning and hail.

Warnings of further unsettled weather follow stormy scenes across parts of the country since Tuesday, amid sweltering conditions and “tropical nights”, where after-dark temperatures do not fall below 20C (68F).
