YOU may not think many people would want a picture on their wall of seagulls tucking into an abandoned McDonald’s in the street.

But Bennie Johnston’s “S*** Brighton” calendar, which contains exactly that along with a lot of other grim images of the city, has been selling like hotcakes since it launched on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old Hanover resident said his project was a celebration of the city’s bad side.

“Four years ago at Christmas I was bombarded with calendars with picture-perfect photos of Brighton,” said the New Zealander.

“But then you walk around two days after Christmas and you just see Christmas trees abandoned on the street. That’s just as much a part of Christmas as anything else.”

Other pictures show rubbish on the beach and a street crammed with traffic barriers.

Now IT professional Mr Johnston is selling his calendar as an alternative Christmas gift.

But aside from the jokes, he wants to make a point.

He said: “People always look at great pictures of Brighton, but then they go outside and it’s c*** and rainy. That never feels great.

“The truth is a lot of the time Brighton is c*** and rainy but that’s absolutely fine. Although there’s a lot of beauty in the world, there’s also a lot of s***.”

The response from people has been positive.

“We had a launch party at the Haus On The Hill pub on Wednesday,” Mr Johnston said. I gave out a few and then made some deliveries around Hanover.

“The actual part of selling it has been. I’ve been getting messages and online orders constantly. When I first put it on Facebook so many people commented.”

All profits will be donated to charity AudioActive.
