A FIERCE fire gutted a combine harvester and spread to four acres of field.
Residents were warned to keep doors and windows locked as the blaze raged for more than three hours yesterday evening.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue was called to the blaze near Lock Lane in Partridge Green at about 5.30pm.
At about 9.30pm a spokeswoman said: "The fire is now out and crews have left the scene.
"At the height of this incident four acres of field were alight.
"The combine was completely destroyed by fire.
"Officers will return to the scene later this evening to ensure no further action is required."
Crews from Shoreham, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Horsham attended the scene.
Four engines and ten high pressure hose reels were used to tackle the fire.
