GOLD medal-winning athletes, philanthropists, and a renowned engineer are among 11 influential figures to be honoured by a university.
The dignitaries, who will receive honorary doctorates from the University of Chichester, are being recognised for the contributions to their fields at a graduation ceremony.
They will join more than 2,000 graduates at the Chichester Festival Theatre on Sunday and Monday.
Team GB sailors Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark, who won gold in the 470 race at the 2016 Rio Games, will both receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science.
They will be joined by Nick Dempsey, the most decorated men’s Olympic windsurfer, who won a silver medal at last year’s competition in Brazil.
He will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science.
Paracanoe champion Emma Wiggs, a university graduate and gold medal-winner in Rio, is to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education.
Also on the list is former vice-chancellor Clive Behagg who, across 41 years at Chichester, oversaw signification expansion of the University, and will receive an Honorary Doctorate.
Award-winning playwright Tanika Gupta, whose productions focus on multicultural inclusion and social justice, has written for EastEnders and Grange Hill and will collect an Honorary Doctorate of Theatre.
Also accepting an Honorary Doctorate of Art will be contemporary dancer Liz Aggiss.
She will share the stage with Ruth Valerio, the director of an international charity dedicated to alleviating worldwide poverty and disease, who will become an Honorary Doctor of Divinity.
The figures also include chartered electrical engineer Benita Mehra who will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science.
She is president and trustee of the Women’s Engineering Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Greg Valerio is to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration and works with the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation to co-ordinate its international gold programme, which supports workers facing exploitation in the world’s most dangerous mines.
Finally, composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who has scored the soundtracks to Hollywood blockbusters and video games in the Call of Duty franchise, will become and Honorary Doctor of Music.
Vice-chancellor Professor Jane Longmore said: “Graduation is rightly seen as a celebration of achievement and the triumphant end of an important phase in our students’ life.
“A degree is much more than just a measure of educational attainment, it is a test of character, of resilience, of determination and creativity.
“I hope that this ceremony will also mark a beginning, in that students will take with them into the future not just happy memories of your time here at the University of Chichester but a quest for knowledge and the gift of friendship that will last a lifetime.”
