ENTRIES have been flooding in for a competition to design a piece of Brighton history.
Brighton Palace Pier launched a competition with The Argus earlier this month to come up with a new sign for the world famous attraction.
New owner Luke Johnson called on the city’s creative talent to send in entries for the new illuminated sign after he decided to rename the much-loved landmark.
He has returned the word Palace to the pier’s name after a long-running campaign by The Argus, which started long before he took ownership this year.
The entrepreneur also asked youngsters to come up with a new mascot to join the pier’s existing two: Pierre the Bear and Derby the Dolphin.
A number of entries have already been received but there is still time to get your submission in.
The winner will see their design placed on top of the pier and will also receive a £1,000 cash prize.
The winner of the mascot competition, open to those under 14, will win a year’s pass for the pier’s rides.
Among those to send in a design is Annette Mary Radford.
Her eye-catching sign is influenced by the Royal Pavilion.
The signage is intended to be in a freestanding see-through lighting arrangement so as not to obscure the dome behind, she said.
She added that the wording would be raised higher so the sign would be visible from the seafront, over the canopy and clock tower at the front entrance entrance and from a distance.
The main colour scheme would be reds and turquoise which is a popular Indian combination.
Designer Mark Kent also sent in a number of designs.
His red and yellow sunshine themed signs also take inspiration from the Royal Pavilion, with the famous minarets visible.
Paul Milton-Lyons’s entry has something of a purple theme with emphasis on the words Palace Pier, with Brighton placed above.
Meanwhile Simone Grant’s design changes colour depending on the time of day, while Kris Phillips’s features a wave and an emphasis on the word Palace.
Anne Martin, general manager of the Brighton Palace Pier, said: “There are so many creative people out there who will have fantastic ideas. We know there is this great affection for the pier so we thought this was the perfect opportunity.
“This is a fantastic chance to be a part of Brighton history. The winner will have their design made and it will be a part of Brighton for years to come.”
