AN EXCITING project has been launched to support new mums and families in crisis.

Eastbourne Foodbank, based in Cornfield Lane, says The Best Start scheme will provide hope in an otherwise difficult situation for struggling people.

Operations Director Howard Wardle said the health profile of Eastbourne shows that around 20 percent of children live in poverty.

He said: "Having a family and raising children is expensive, and we continue to see a rise in the number of families using our services; struggling to meet the basic needs of family life, from food to clothing to children’s essentials.

"We believe every child has a right to start life with their needs met; that no child should go without."

He explained there are three parts to The Best Start scheme.

New and expectant mums will be provided with a Best Start baby package that includes a Moses basket with nappies, sleep suits, blankets, and toys.

Mums who already have children will also receive maternity pads, breast pads and a pamper bag of toiletries.

The Best Start essentials package can provide baby equipment from pushchairs, bouncers, and toys, while the older children’s package will provide clothing and age appropriate toys.

The project is being led by Anna Morse, Sarah French and Roisin Murphy, who will be hosting events across the town to promote the project and raise funds to be able to buy new mattresses and essentials. The project is not funded and relies solely on donations.

In order to receive a Best Start package all referrals must come through a healthcare professional, agency, church or similar.

There are various ways you can get involved in the project through donations of baby items, to sponsoring the project, fundraising or becoming involved as a Best Start volunteer.
