Firefighters have been called to reports of an explosion at Shoreham Power station. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it had received several calls about a possible explosion of one of the transformers at the site shortly after 1pm today. Witness Anil Mistry said: “I was just passing the station when on the left hand side I suddenly saw this incredibly intense bright light and then smoke. “Then another part of the power station started giving out a lot of smoke and steam. “At that point I decided to leave because I thought it would be better to keep my distance just in case.” A fire service spokesman said one of the station’s transformers had blown out which had caused a small fire. When crews arrived the fire was already out. They checked the scene to make sure the area was safe and have now left the site.
