The man accused of murdering retired Worthing solicitor Donald Lock in Findon last week has "clear psychiatric and mental health issues".
Matthew Daley, 34, of St Elmo Road, Worthing, appeared at Hove Crown Court via videolink this morning charged with the murder of the great-grandfather.
Cycling enthusiast Mr Lock, 79, had recently been given the all-clear from prostate cancer. He died after a "frenzied" stabbing on the A24 at Findon, near Worthing, last Thursday.
Daley appeared via videolink from Lewes Prison and spoke to confirm his name. Defence lawyer Barry Cheeseman said Daley has "clear psychiatric and mental health issues".
Daley was asked by Judge Shani Barnes whether he would prefer to appear at his next hearing in person or again via videolink.
Mr Daley said: "Maybe I will be more comfortable [via videolink] but maybe I will come to court considering the emotion..."
Remanding Daley back into custody ahead of his plea hearing on September 25, Judge Barnes said: "It's clearly a tragic case but it's also a high-profile case.
"Mr Daley you will return to court in person on September 25."
