Passengers were evacuated from a bus which burst into flames.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at 6.54am when passengers on board the bus smelt smoke.
All on board were safely removed from the Brighton and Hove Bus Service at the Old Steine, Brighton.
Sussex Police closed the road in the area while firefighters from Preston Circus tackled the flames which were coming from the back of the vehicle.
Crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one in seven foam to extinguish the fire.
Motorists heading north were diverted and bus customers were delayed while the incident was dealt with.
The cause of the fire was found to be accidental.
The road was reopened at just after 8am.
