Council officials are taking action to evict travellers from an unauthorised site.

A group of travellers parked their caravans in Carden Park, Hollingbury, earlier this week.

As reported in The Argus, the authorised traveller site at Horsdean is closed for up to four weeks for maintenance work costing £25,000.

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The council is working closely with the police with regards to the illegal encampment of travellers at Carden Park.

“At present there are four caravans in the park. A joint visit by the police and council was made to the park earlier in the week and legal proceedings started.

“A court summons will be issued and a court hearing is set for next Friday. In the meantime, the council will continue to liaise with the police to monitor the situation.

“The lock on the gate was found to be broken, which is how the travellers gained.”
