A high-profile prostitute has been cleared of trying to dodge paying taxes on her earnings from sex.

Angela Nangle was accused of deliberately failing to pay the Treasury thousands of pounds in tax she had earned at up to £150 an hour as a sex worker.

But she walked free from court today after a jury of six men and six women agreed she had not realised she owed the money.

The jury at Hove Crown Court was told that Miss Nangle worked as an "erotic services provider" from her luxury flat on Brighton seafront.

On her website she listed her charges as £150 an hour or £600 per night and she had also taken out adverts in the press.

The court was told that the tax she owed on her earnings between 2002 and 2005 was estimated at between £7,000 and £11,000.

During the trial Customs and Revenue officers accepted that guidance manuals recognised that prostitutes still did not realise their earnings are liable to tax.

No tax on earnings sounds good to me. But if she does pay tax will the money paid classed as living on immoral earnings ??? Is that still against the law ?? if so I'm changing my job title.

I love that her defence was she thought what she was doing was illegal anyway so she didn't have to worry about taxes.

How can you pay tax on an illegal job ?? Does this mean that drug dealers will have to give the goverment a cut of there immoral earnings? Idont think so some how !!!

Clive, that is the whole point.
HMRC DO indeed tax both illegal and immoral earnings.
It is a very complicated business.
But, once again, may i say: 'They were only doing their job'
I have to forgive them and move on.

Its simple enough to know whether tax might apply, you have to apply the trading test and consider whether your are selling a service or product on a repeated basis (not sure how frequent it has to be admitedly)..

She wrote a book about prostitution and constantly advised others of its legality etc on TV & Radio. She is just acting dumb to escape paying her taxes.

Since when has ignorance of the law been a defence?
In an article in the Daily Mirror she debates with MPs, how can she have th eknowledge to debate with MPs on prostitution but claim ignorance.
Was she also claiming any benefits during this time, she seems to be working the system.

Just imagine, she’s had to have sex with people she didn’t know or probably like (let alone love), she’s probably had sex when she didn’t want to and she’s had to do what the client wanted rather than be spontaneous. She is certainly unable to acknowledge her clients in public for fear of wrecking their lives. Most likely, she also suffers the humiliation of not really being quite accepted by the rest of society.
In my book, a posh flat and money don’t in any way compensate for that kind of existence.
And now she’s going to have to work even harder to satisfy the tax man!

"In my book, a posh flat and money don’t in any way compensate for that kind of existence."

No one is forcing her to be a prostitute!!

If shes savvy enough to make a "business" out of it then she is certainly able to earn money in other, perhaps more honest careers...

There's nothing dishonest about prostitution itself bb, blob. That's probably why it's not a crime.
Unless the clients are unattached, it is they who are dishonest.
As I inferred, prostitution is a horrid life with no compensations.

Should the police seize her for receiving SWOLLEN goods?

"Hooker" "prostitute" more rubbish reporting by the Argus. In the UK they are Prostitutes not hookers, using the wrong name is bad enough but using both description just show the low levels of professionalism from the Argus or is it Argos I get confused.

George McCoy, Staffs says...

Prostitutes resent paying tax because their activities are condemned by politicians who will not legalise their activities, yet who use their services. Then again Ronald Reagan once famously said the world's two oldest professions, i.e. Prostitution and Politics have a lot in common

I'd say a prostitute has much more integrity than a politician. Prostitutes at least deliver the goods.
Picture this: politician goes to prostitute (more common than we think) pays the going rate and gets satisfaction. Prostitute pays her taxes (maybe lol)and votes but the politician reneges on his election promises, increases taxes and gives less and less for them in return!

What fabulous news - I am really delighted to that Letisha's stylish reputation has been restored. What an ordeal for a celebrated author and local celebrity to go through. I met Letisha for the first time only recently at Forde Hair St. James Street and even though she was going through hell she was kind enough to offer me a signed copy of her book which I thought was remarkably kind under the circumstances.

It doesn't matter what the critics say Letisha has star quality - glamour in the face of adversity and we love her for it.
