Police caught driving dodgy motors
|
| The police van pictured as it was parked in Western Road last week |
Police have been accused of driving vehicles illegally on Sussex roads.
A police van with no wing mirror and a marked car with an illegible number plate were spotted on the same day in Brighton city centre.
Eagle-eyed Argus reader Joe Parker took photographs of the vehicles on Tuesday.
The van was parked on Western Road outside the Primark store, while the car was parked across two pay and display bays at the Old Steine.
Mr Parker, 22, of New England Road, Brighton, said: ìThe van has no wing mirror and the car has an illegible rear registration plate.
ìUs average Joes get pulled over for a faulty brake light, and yet the police think they can abuse their authority and drive about with similar faults.
ìDriving a van with a missing wing mirror like that is dangerous, especially with no rear view mirror. What if a child was cycling beside them?
ìIt seems it is one rule for them and another for the rest of us.î
Brighton and Hove City Councillor Ben Duncan, who is a member of the Sussex Police Authority, said: ìIf there are breaches of any law, even if it is just traffic regulations, then the culprits must be held to account.
ìWe simply cannot have a situation where people think police officers are above the law.î
The row comes just weeks after police were criticised for parking in a disabled bay at a supermarket.
Officers parked in the bay at the Marks & Spencer store at Holmbush, Shoreham, despite several other free spaces being available on April 24.
Police said the vehicle was being used to collect a shoplifter who had been behaving violently towards shop staff.
Speaking about the latest case, Steve Percy, of the People's Parking Protest, said: ìThe main thing here is that these vehicles are not technically suitable for the road.
ìYou or I would get pulled over and probably handed a ticket.
ìAlso unless there was an emergency, in both of these incidents the vehicles should have been given a parking ticket.î
A spokesman for Sussex police said: "The van in question is one of our prison vans and was one of only two that were available that day.
ìDue to the necessity to deal with prisoners it was decided that the need to utilise it outweighed the fact that one of its mirrors was damaged.
ìThe defect has since been rectified, and was done so within three days of the damage being reported. The vehicle was not in a sufficiently dangerous state to make it unroadworthy.
"The car is one of our response vehicles and was responding to an emergency call at Royal York Buildings where we had received a report of a theft in progress, with offenders still on scene."

A wing mirror out would only get VDRS form which means you have to get the fault fixed in a set period of time, it has no fine etc...it was fixed within 3 days by Police so was done correctly!

Presumably a VERY slow news day, even for the Argus. Why is this rubbish even printed?

no doubt Mr Parker will be helping police with many of their enquirers soon..
if he has a car, he should be asking if he's been checked on the PNC.

Oh dear.....I am a serving Police Officer and worry what is happening with the world when articles like this are printed in the Argus. I dont think some people realise what we are expected to do. We ARE understaffed, very overstretched and expected to run a Police Force that is very near to braking point, but manages to work because the average officer goes far beyond what he or she is expected to do (overtime without pay, no meal breaks, long shifts, cancelled rest days and unable to take leave because we are so short of staff). As has been pointed out, the vehicle defects would have at most been subject to a VDRS form, and probably just words of advice if it was a private vehicle so the argument of one rule for us is rubbish. Yes the van should have a mirror, and in a perfect world we would have enough vehicles to cover a breakdown, but if you were waiting for that van to pick up a prisoner who may be violent, how would you feel if none were available? I will look for a proper space (difficult in most places) before I look for the burglar that is in your home, or deal with the violent shoplifter or even stop the fight in town on a Friday or Saturday night, just in case somebody takes a picture of my vehicle and complains that I am abusing my position. I think it has been made clear that all the cars involved were dealing with necessary jobs, and needed by officers, so I wonder what the issue is?

I was behind a police car yesterday and everytime he got to a red light he switched on his flashing lights and carried over them and then switched them off when he got to the other side. I saw him do that 3 times... Is this the normal way for them? or were they just being unfair?

I know when I see some of the sort of peple the police have to deal with daily, I couldnt do their job, but, nearly everytime I see a police car it is speeding and not on an emergency call, I saw a dog handler van on the A24 that was going so fast he nearly lost it on one of the bends that we are always being told to slow down at, again not on an emergency cos I saw the same guy at the same time the next day on way home from work..I also heard that police vehicles do not need an MOT? Again, I know they have a lot to put up with but maybe practice what is preached..

congratulations Evening Argus, yet more propaganda printed by your half baked reporters who just either read internet message boards for stories or just make them up. Bring back quality journalists like Phil Mills who understood from all angles when a story was worth printing. You have yet again demonstrated you are gutter press

Couldn't tell you if that car was on a job but sometimes it's easier and causes less of a problem keeping the lights off. "Eagle eyed" Joe Parker has clearly got too much time on their hands, as has the Argus for reporting this.

Oh come on Mr Parker, is this all you got, you must be a bundle of fun. No wonder this country is in the state it is in with you moaning about this and then the Argus feeling it was newsworthy. How many white vans have defective parts on it, how many boy racers change their number plates etc. From the article itself the wing mirror was fixed within three days of it braking and the argus bringing up that story of the parking in Shoreham again. Firstly who really cares and secondly the police were attending a violent shoplifter. Please report newsworthy, interesting information or really please don't bother.

The public underestimate just how much the police do for us and anyone who slates them just because they are police are just childish and immature with no grip on reality. I for one respect them for putting their lives in danger for the safety of the public but just wish there were more of them out there and they had greater powers to give the stupid idiots they deal with a b*****y great slap every now and then. Some of those idiots appear to be posting on this comments section today. Try looking at your parents if you want someone to blame for your misery, they've obviously brought you up to be disrespectful scum.

Good job no-one noticed their speed camera van illegally parked in the bus stop at 8.10 on Wednesday morning then, with the driver on the phone with the keys in the ignition and the engine still running - it's all about road safety they say :-(

"I was behind a police car yesterday and every time he got to a red light he switched on his flashing lights and carried over them and then switched them off when he got to the other side. I saw him do that 3 times" Said Rachel!
There are only two ways this is possible Rachel?
One, You either followed the police car through the red lights!
Or Two, Each time the police car had passed, you miracusly sat there patiently while the traffic lights went through a whole sequence without a single vehicle turning left or right and ending up between you and the police car!
Which was it Please?
Any police officers watching?

Well Ben,
Small minded as you are.... The Road Was Long and Very Straight with Lights every 100 - 200 yards. Maybe you could work out which road I was on and you would understand that you could see from 1 set of lights to the next and whilst then moving when light was green you could see the car go through the next set. SO I Have No Worries or No reason to have to really explain myself to the likes of YOU !!!

Ha this is pathetic, are the people of Sussex really this bored that this is what they call news. Well Argus I have lost count of the number of times that i have seen your vans parked in controlled areas or stopped on yellow lines. So should i maybe in future get out of the car and give the culprit that has parked in the controlled area a fine for £60 and three points. Not everyone is perfect Argus.
As already mentioned the Police had incidents which they were dealing and quite frankly if an officer requires a van for a prisoner that is violent then I think it is completely justified to go out with a van with one wing mirror or lets say jo public is getting assaulted and needs the Police how would he act if they turned around and said "i'm sorry sir our only available unit had an unreadable number plate, we will get to you later?".
Rachel - you mention about the car going through the red lights, maybe there was a reson for that such as an emergency call, for example intruders in a premises if the police attend with light and sirens going Mr Burglar is going to think oh the police are coming.

As for police causing accidents, if you are refering to the most recent incident in Brighton, a car failed to stop for Police which was being driven by youths who had no license as they were not old enough to drive.........
Grow up, if you dont like the police dont call them problem solved, im sure they wont mind not having to come and visit you.

Not a copper I don't call the police because
1. I'm law abiding
2. All I need is a crime number if anything gets stolen and then insurance deals with the problem
3. I live in a community where we actually deal with problems before needing the police(luckily for me because its rare)
5. I still don't mind paying for them
6. Have medal receiving ex-coppers in my immediate family.
7. When I was a victim (and 4 others) of violence someone called the ambulance, who were great, the police turned up and were useless
To Angela IQ is not a very good scale of intelligence since it ignores the creative and compassionate side of intelligence, your intelligence would be helped if you could stop swearing at people just because you don't like what they say.

Blah, blah, blah....get a different job then plodboy.

"A car, possibly an unmarked Police vehicle, was seen being driven along the A23 at approx 2.47pm today with only one headlight working. Photographic evidence obtained from our eagled eyed investigative reporter Joe Parker, confirmed a car WAS being along this stretch of road at this time. It has as yet not been able to confirm if the vehicle was a Police car or not, but it is well known that Police cars regularly use this stretch of road. Our on going enquiries will continue.

Police cars do not have to be mot'd but they are serviced and maintained way above mot standards . It would of been reported the same day that it had happened and one would of been ordered and fitted at the earliest oppotunity. The running costs of the fleet are horrendous particulary criminal damage caused by the scum they put in the back . You would not belive what some members of society feel they should do in the back of a vehicle . But they do have to pay damages , albeit at 50p a month out of their giro .

Explodtech you've convinced me that the cars are well maintained in general and to be honest I do know this since I've been in a couple(before you ask -not as a perp) but sort out your prejudice you imply it is only the unemployed that are criminals and that is just rubbish, just like the hoodie argument by anti-hoodie.

But get it right, MOST people in normal employment dont habitually go shoplifting or steal alcohol from supermarkets. Yes, of course there will be an exception to the rule, but that simply proves the case that the majority of thefts like this are carried out by street drunks, drug addicts, and can work/wont work benefit thieves - in other words a lot of unemployed people.
'Anti-Hoodies' comments are quite correct as applied, namely in response to some brain dead little moron that somehow managed to use his computer to post his dislike of the Police - (I doubt if they like him a lot either).
Of course we all know that owning or wearing a hooded top does NOT make you a 'hoodie'- I certainly hope not as I have a number myself. The term 'hoodie' is generally used to describe youths of very low intelligence, that wish to draw attention to themselves by shouting, swearing, and generally using words they dont know the meaning of, in order to try impress their peers or mates who have an equally low number of brain cells. Their crudely strung together sentences more often than not end in the term 'innit', which of course means absolutely nothing in the context in which it is used - so its very appropriate. These outcasts of society are also known to participate in shop theft, and occasionally carry out 'happy slapping' attacks on people in the street, so long as they outnumber the victim by at least 4:1. Its always so gratifying when one reads in the paper of several of them ending up in intensive care for 6 months, after picking on the wrong person - I laugh my head off I really do.
Anyway to summarise - if the head inside the hood has almost no brain cells, the owner can be described as a 'hoodie'. Otherwise it is merely someone wearing a hooded top, which is totally different.
Also such hoodies have to go around in large groups because they share half a brain between them! the term I use is "COLLECTIVE THINKING"

The police posting on here with their sob stories is pathetic.
They should realise that although these faults with their vehicles and driving may be minor, the message it sends out to the rest of us is that the law applies to us and not to them, how are we supposed to take the police seriously and how are they supposee to earn respect like that?
If you dont like your job then get out, stop using it as an excuse when people rightly point out that you not doing as you preach..

Naturally, I would abide by all speed limits and give way to every other vehicle including buses and cyclists.
Of course, if I discovered a wing mirror had been broken, you would have to wait until tomorrow.
Im sure you will then be happy.
I think the rudeness shown in an earlier comment by 'Ronnie' is totally uncalled for, but I understand where he is coming from.
