The Argus: The Blue Hearts

The Blue Hearts

From: Brighton

Influences: Lou Reed, The Doors, John Cale and Leonard Cohen.

Profile: Having started out taking inspiration from roots music and indie melodies, Brighton’s Blue Hearts have embraced a new sound for their fourth album Jukebox Of Maladies.

Dubbing their new creation Neon Rock, the four-piece is unleashing their stronger sound, which takes inspiration from brash rock ’n’ roll and mixes it with electric violin and pedal steel, on Monday when the album becomes available for download.

The album was recorded at Brighton’s Metway Studios and will receive a physical release in October. The band’s roots go back to the early 1990s when guitarist Mark Horse was a member of Brighton band The Piranhas and violinist Sue Bradley was in Pookiesnackenburger, whose members would eventually go on to form the West End show Stomp. They released their first album Lullaby For The Lost in 1995, which featured backing vocals by Kirsty MacColl.
