The Argus: Kalininch and Lacey

Stephen J Kalinich and Peter Lacey

From: Brighton

Influences: The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, Clifford T Ward, Camel, Stevie Wonder, XTC, Steely Dan, Santana and 10CC.

Profile: When it comes to musical CVs it doesn’t get much more impressive than Stephen J Kalinich’s history. In 1968 the American-born singer and poet was signed to The Beach Boys’s Brother Records and released a Brian Wilson-produced album A World Of Peace May Come. And he was a staff writer at Motown’s Jobette Music penning tracks for the likes of Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, Randy Crawford and Odyssey.

Now he has teamed up with singer-songwriter Peter Lacey, who has previously worked with Clifford T Ward, on a project that resonates with the city where they first met. The album South Downs Way, which was released earlier this month, is an anthology of songs, spoken narratives and poetry set to music based around the trail that cuts through the Sussex and Hampshire landscape.
