AN Essex-based course is spearheading a new qualification, tailored for the next generation of business managers, which combines apprentice training with a full honours degree
Anglia Ruskin University, in partnership with Barclays, will deliver a new Chartered Manager Degree Apprentice programme.
The course is one of the first of the new high-level apprenticeships launched by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.
The first intake of 22 students has now started the Chartered Manager Degree Apprentice course at Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School.
Professor Gary Packham, dean of Anglia Ruskin’s Lord Ashcroft International Business School, said: “The BA (Hons) Management and Leadership work-based degree is a flagship course designed to achieve the highest possible results and set the highest possible standards. The initial feedback from students about their learning and development experience has proved excellent.”
The new course draws on Anglia Ruskin’s experience in delivering other work-based degree courses for the past eight years.
This is the first time, however, that apprenticeships and degree courses have been combined for chartered management studies.
Apprentices receive an accredited degree, and also achieve professional status from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) upon successful completion of the programme.
Vanessa Knowles, programme leader for the Barclays leadership and management programme at Anglia Ruskin, said: “Working on this latest Government-led initiative is extremely exciting and signals a major shift in the way in which universities can engage more readily with organisations to help shape and deliver the way they develop talent.”
The previous cohort of Barclays graduates from the BA (Hons) management and leadership course received their degree certificates in October, and celebrated at the Houses of Commons.
Of the 39 graduates, 15 were awarded first class honours, and prizes were awarded to Matthew Allen for the Most Outstanding Academic Achievement, James Page and Sophie Hoodless for the Course Ambassador Award and Alice Jones for the Spirit of the Programme Award.
