Brighton: DJ and quizmaster diagnosed with rare and aggressive cancer

Angus Greenhalgh, also know as MC Cash Back, is well known in Brighton as a mainstay in the city’s entertainment scene.

After struggling with his health since September, having seen doctors and gone to A&E several times, last month Angus, 42, was diagnosed with sacral chordoma, an incredibly rare bone cancer.

Currently, Angus’s tumour is the size of a pear and is in his sacrum, at the base of his spine.

Emma and Angus’s mother Rose Greenhalgh looked in to the next steps and were worried to find that treatment on the NHS involves an “invasive” surgery.

Emma said: “It involves taking out a whole bottom bone of the spine and means that for the rest of your life you have no bowel or bladder functions and you can lose the ability to walk.

“We felt this was really cruel.”

Emma and Rose began to research other options and spoke to doctors in London, America, Italy and Austria with the help of the charity the Chordoma Foundation.

Angus and his family decided carbon ion therapy would be the best option to allow him to live a long life with continued mobility.

But carbon ion therapy is not available in the UK and is not funded by the NHS.

Now, Angus’s family are fundraising to get him this treatment in Austria.

At the time of writing, they have raised £58,000 of their £60,000 goal.

The fundraiser was only opened on Saturday.

Emma said: “We have been blown away by the support from the community.

“Even though Angus seems very confident he has quite low self esteem and this is a real boost.

"His kindness, humour, talent, support and non judgemental nature have won the hearts of everyone who meets him.

“It is the first time we have been happy in weeks.

“We have decided to leave the fundraiser open.

“This is in order to create a buffer in case of any unforeseen medical expenses and to cover his return to the UK as he will still be recovering and most likely unable to work for a while.”
